Small Isles in Spring 2016

The Details, Cruise 1 of the 2016 season:

-16th to 23rd May

-205 nautical miles.

-Crew: Laurie, Lynn, Mark, Shona, Peter

Taking the opportunity of some clear spring weather with sunshine and a fine breeze, we sailed up to Mull, passing Duart Castle which featured in the film “When Eight Bells Toll” and staring a very young Anthony Hopkins, then out to the open waters surrounding the enchanting island group of the Small Isles. Each of these four islands has its own unique charm and are well worth visiting next year. The island of Coll was our next destination and after rowing Bluebird out of Canna harbour we picked up a breeze that developed into a good blow culminating at Gunna Sound which lies between Coll and Tiree. Here the sun burst through the clouds, visibility enabled us to see forever and the warm wind blew in perfect harmony with the boat. The sails driving Bluebird with ease through aquamarine gin clear water and past salt white sandy beaches. Our passage the next day returning to Mull from Coll was again filled with some exciting sailing conditions.

In Tobermory we were joined by three more guests who arrived by private water taxi from Oban before we sailed down the Sound of Mull.

Bluebirds diving gear was put to good use at the new marina in Loch Aline when a stray rope had found its way around the propellor. This unexpected situation provided some extra entertainment for the crew when seeing their skipper disappear under the waves!

Peter was next up to experience helming Bluebird in challenging sailing conditions when heading into the more open waters of the Lyn of Lorn before settling down for the night at Seil Island just beside the well known landmark called: “The bridge over the Atlantic.” During the next two days we continued our sailing adventure to Airds Bay in Loch Creran before finishing our cruise at Oban.

The dynamic of enjoying great company, great food with enthusiastic sailors made for a promising first cruise of the season.

Thank you Lynn, Mark, Shona and Peter.
